Automatic
Commuter tax credit (Verkehrsabsetzbetrag)
As an employee you get it automatically through payroll, whether you ride your bike, take public transport or drive to work. If you commute a long way, you may also be entitled to the commuter allowance, even if you cycle.

Mileage allowance for bikes
For business trips on your own bike, your employer can pay you a tax-free mileage allowance, up to €750 a year. If they don't, you can claim it as income-related expenses. Your daily trip to work doesn't count; that's covered by the commuter tax credit.

Running
Writing off a bike for your business
If you mainly use your bike for your business, you can write it off: up to €1,000 as a low-value asset in the year you buy it, above that spread over its useful life. Repairs with receipts count too.

Subsidies from your state and municipality
Many federal states and municipalities fund bikes, e-bikes or cargo bikes themselves, often only for a short time. Ask your municipality or search the klimaaktiv subsidy database.

City of Vienna cargo bike subsidy
Vienna funded new cargo bikes for private individuals with up to €800, up to €1,000 with an electric motor. The money ran out in April 2025, and no new applications are possible.

Federal subsidy for (e-)folding and cargo bikes
The federal government funded (e-)folding bikes for private individuals with €500 if you had an annual public transport pass. The subsidy was stopped on 20 January 2026 because the budget had run out. Whether it will come back is open.
