Bicycle Subsidies in Austria

From grants for cargo and folding bikes to tax benefits for commuters: Austria offers a range of subsidies for cycling. Here you’ll find a compact overview of what's available and how you can benefit.

All Subsidies

The Most Important Bicycle Subsidies in Detail.

Subsidy for Cargo Bikes in Vienna

The city of Vienna supports the purchase of cargo bikes, wheelchair cargo bikes, and wheelchair rickshaws for private individuals. The subsidy covers up to 50% of the purchase price — up to 800 euros for cargo bikes without an electric motor and up to 1,000 euros for models with e-drive.

Requirements:

  • Only newly purchased cargo bikes
  • Adults with main residence in Vienna
  • Retention obligation of two years
  • Invoice must be no older than 30 days at submission
Federal Subsidy for (E-)Folding Bikes

The federal government supports the purchase of folding bikes and e-folding bikes with a flat rate of 500 euros. This aims to make the combination of public transport and cycling more attractive.

Requirements:

  • Folded dimensions max. 110 × 80 × 40 cm
  • Proof of a valid public transport annual pass (for folding bikes without e-drive)
  • E-folding bikes: max. 600 W motor power, max. 25 km/h
  • Battery must be charged with electricity from renewable sources
Traffic Deduction and Commuter Allowance

Did you know that as a bicycle commuter, you automatically benefit? Trips between home and workplace are considered in the traffic deduction (496 euros in 2026) during payroll accounting — regardless of whether you travel by bike, car, or public transport.

Mileage Allowance for Business Trips by Bike

You can claim business trips by bike as advertising expenses in your tax return. 0.25 euros per kilometer are credited, up to a maximum of 3,000 km per year — resulting in up to 750 euros.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 km distance per trip
  • It must be a business trip (e.g., the way to work)
Tax Write-Off for Bike Purchases

With predominantly business use (more than 50%), the purchase cost of a bike can be written off for tax purposes. If the purchase price is below 1,000 euros, the bike can be immediately and fully depreciated in the year of purchase as a low-value asset. For higher costs, depreciation is over the usual useful life of typically five years — for both regular and e-bikes.

By the way: Ongoing, documented repair costs can also be claimed.
